1.0 Is the Bible Consistent?

The first of the bullet points made above suggests that to be without error the Bible must have a consistent message that is non-contradictory. This assumption is based on there only being one truth, one set of requirements to follow that God has given us in the Bible. If contradictions appear they need to be explained, otherwise the understanding that the Bible is without error does not hold.

Some contradictions in the Bible, like inconsistent numbers, can be explained by errors due to transcription, as accepted in the foundation clause of the statement of faith. Other contradictions come from the unmistakeable difference between the Old and New Testaments, one way to explain these is by the use of an on-going revelation. My search focused on contradictions that are hard or even impossible to reasonably explain and fall outside of the types of contradictions mentioned above.

As it turns out there are loads of inconsistencies to choose from, so I've had to be selective. I've found that once you spot one inconsistency they keep coming up all over the place.

  1. Thank you for this excellently researched site. Human beings are programmed or hardwired for religious membership, for group identity politics, for conformity, etc. Such things define us and provide meaning. When we are separated from such contexts, it can be very alienating and disorienting. If we are lucky, we do, however, ultimately emerge into a new "Truth," one that offers a vastly greater freedom and joy than anything offered in the dank halls of most houses of worship. We become free to become what we were meant to be: complete human beings operating in a reality-based consciousness, and unencumbered by delusions.

  2. From bears eating children for the "crime" of poking fun at a prophet for being bald, to a verse advocating the stoning of rebellious teenagers, the Bible is a bundle of contradictory and/or nonsensical themes and instructions. I have always been mystified at the dogmatic assertion that it contains coherent themes. It is instead a huge ideological morass from which anything can be argued by anyone.
